Living Our Mission

OUR MISSION

To inspire lives of purpose, learning, and service through cultivating each student's God-given potential.

157 Years of Excellence

In 1867, as Charleston lay in ruins after the Civil War, The Reverend Dr. Anthony Toomer Porter had a vision to start a school to educate the children of the Lowcountry. In the 157 years since he brought his vision to life, Porter-Gaud has become a pillar of education in the Holy City. Our graduates are leaders in many different fields in their respective communities around the world. We are looking forward and beyond the Lowcountry to be one of the leading independent schools in the Southeast.

"Porter-Gaud recognizes and celebrates the unique talents, abilities, and interests of every child. Working together in the classroom, on field trips, and in after-school activities provides boys and girls the opportunity to learn from each other intellectually, as well as socially. We believe that co-education best prepares children for their future as compassionate, productive, and socially-aware citizens."

Our vision of a learner

Our Vision of a Learner, Porter-Gaud Schools

Go forth and forge your own path.

All Porter-Gaud students should have an educational experience that prepares them to be effective lifelong learners and contributors to our global community. Now more than ever, the Porter-Gaud experience must not only provide for the acquisition of rigorous academic content, but it must also be more intentional about fostering critical thinking, communication, collaboration, creativity, and other forward-looking skills our young people need to thrive in this complex, rapidly changing world.

Adjacent  is the collective vision that articulates our community’s aspirations for all our students.

As members of this amazing school family, what are we called to do? The answer to that question looks different for each of us, but we all have a vital role to play. When you become a Cyclone, that comes with a promise. One that ensures you have opportunities to pursue your best self. You are part of something so special.

You are known. You are challenged. You are valued. You are loved.

We began the last school year with a new mission.  One that honors the past, celebrates who we are now, and serves as a lighthouse, guiding our path forward through growth and innovation. To inspire lives of purpose, learning, and service through cultivating each student’s God-given potential.
